🛋️ Home & furnitureHow to remove carpet & rug stains

Blot, don't rub · always wipe out the detergent

Carpets and rugs have a backing and adhesive layer under the pile, so pouring on lots of water lets it seep down to the floor, where it won't dry well and starts to smell. When a stain happens, blot it up right away, and after using detergent, make sure to wipe it all out.

🔬 Why this order works

A stain on the tips of the pile comes out easily the sooner you lift it, but rubbing pushes it down between the fibers and spreads it. Leftover detergent turns sticky, attracts dirt, and the spot goes dark again.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

🧰 By material

① Light synthetic carpet

It's fairly tough, so you can try tapping remaining color with a cloth dipped in diluted oxygen bleach. Test first, and wipe with clean water afterward.

② Dark & shag rugs

Don't use bleach. Detergent that gets deep into the pile is hard to remove, so use very little and wipe with clean water several times.

③ Wool & jute natural-fiber rugs

For wool, use a dilute wool-specific mild detergent in cold water. Jute easily gets brown water marks when wet, so treat it dry where possible and leave large stains to a professional cleaner.

🚫 Don't

  • Scrubbing hard with a brush — the pile frays and the stain spreads.
  • Pouring on lots of water — the backing and floor get wet, causing smells and mold.
  • Letting it dry without wiping out the detergent.

⏳ If it has already dried

For an old stain, let the soapy water soak in for a few minutes, then repeat tapping and blotting. If you know what the stain is, use the method from that entry but with less water. For large or deep-set stains, a carpet cleaning service is the safer choice.

💡 Tip

While the treated spot dries, lift one side of the rug so the floor underneath dries too.

❓ Common questions

What about pet urine marks?

As in the urine entry, blot it up, dilute with water, then use an enzyme cleaner — that's the most effective. If the smell stays, pets tend to have accidents in the same spot again, so get rid of the smell as well.

There's gum or candle wax stuck on it.

Hold a bag of ice on it to harden it, then pick it off. For wax, you can lay a paper towel on top and melt it with an iron on a low setting so it's absorbed, but synthetic pile can melt with heat, so touch the iron down only very briefly and check.
